Butterfly mural at Beverley Beck

Murals under the bridge at Beverley Beck

A series of wonderful murals by artist Emma Garness has been unveiled beneath a concrete road bridge over Beverley Beck in East Yorkshire, England.

The murals were commissioned by the local council, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. They brighten up the otherwise drab concrete bridge and are an inspired attempt to add to the already pleasing aesthetics of this popular district of Beverley.

Prowling owls are a common sight in East Yorkshire. I think these are barn owls, one of the most common British species.

Butterflies play an essential role in the ecosystem but are under threat from overuse of pesticides. Here we see – I think – a Cabbage White and a Red Admiral.

Perch are common n the inland fresh water rivers and lakes of the United Kingdom. Here we also see some lilies – an echo of Claude Monet?

Swans are a graceful sight on the inland waterways of the United Kingdom.

In an age of diminished public art budgets it is nice to see some great examples of public art.
