Yorkshire post box with Remembrance Day art

Folk Art in Beverley – Remembrance Day

Art is everywhere and always has been. At some point in the development of human civilisation the concept of a ‘professional’ artist was born. These people produced many great works: the Sphinx in Egypt, the Sistine Chapel, the Last Supper, Guernica and so forth.

Folk Art has a charm of its own and speaks a simpler language but one just as close to the heart. Maybe even closer.

Folk art in Beverley, East Yorkshire calls us to remember those who gave their lives in war
Folk art on top of a Royal Mail post box marks Remembrance Day

The makers who created this folk art in the East Yorkshire town of Beverley for Remembrance Day showed a certain panache in designing the piece. The art complements the red of the Royal Mail post box with a dignified bust of a serviceman. Lest we forget those who served their country and often made the ultimate sacrifice.

May all those who gave their lives rest in peace. A special mention to my grandfather Francis Johnson, a Royal Navy and then merchant seaman who fell victim to German bombs in 1943.

We also hope for peace in our times.
