I was very privileged to be able to visit the latest Luxmuralis light show at Beverley Minster. This time the theme was 'Time'. The show consisted of a series of light projections on the walls of the Minster, accompanied by a soundtrack of music and spoken word. The show was a celebration of the concept of time, and how it intertwines with every aspect of nature and human culture and history.
Many of the projections featured an animated ticking clock. The clock was a central motif in the show, symbolising the relentless march of time. In addition there were many references to past civilisations such as ancient Egypt, Greek and Rome.
The show featured digital clocks in addition to historical clocks showing how there have been changes to the very devices which we use to measure time.
The show featured some projections of the peoples of the world whose fortunes varied over time and who were sometimes the victims of colonial expansion.
Being a British show there was a projection about Thomas Paine the author of the seminal book 'The Rights of Man'. This book influenced civil and political thinking in Britain and many other countries. With the passage of time the rights of citizens have generally improved.
The show also featured the evolution of life on Earth and the passage of time in the natural world. At all times during the past millions of years since life began on Earth, the forms of life have been different.
Luxmuralis is a spectacular light show which also encourages the viewer to reflect on the theme being explored. To see it is definitely time well spent.
